When The Magnificent Seven appeared on cinema screens in 1960, heroism was a man’s affair. Today, it is women artists who are redefining the art world with visionary force. Sebastian C. Strenger presents major female positions in contemporary art, including Ingeborg Lüscher (*1936, CH), Elfie Semotan (*1941, AT), Xenia Hausner (*1951, AT), Valérie Favre (*1959, FR), Sandra Vásquez de la Horra (1978, CHL), Liliane Tomasko (1967, CH), Simone Haack (1978, DE), and Cristina Lucas (1973, ES). Their works challenge power structures, play with identity, or deconstruct dominant narratives. They work figuratively or abstractly, narratively or conceptually, politically or introspectively. These artists are transforming the art market and shaping the new canon in international institutions by questioning existing structures and opening new spaces for thought. The group exhibition The Magnificent Seven, opening during Paris Gallery Weekend, will run from 23 May to 22 June 2025 and brings together eight major international contemporary positions. It is the very first exhibition in the new premises of the historic BASTIAN gallery, which has come from Berlin and settled in Paris after deciding to leave London due to Brexit and its impact on art and the art market. BASTIAN can look back on nearly forty years of success, notably with artists such as Joseph Beuys, Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, Anselm Kiefer, and Andy Warhol.
