Emil Nolde

Emil Nolde (1867–1956) was a German painter and printmaker associated with Expressionism, famous for the intensity of his colors, his turbulent landscapes, and his religious scenes with stark forms. Although he was at one time sympathetic to Nazism, he was later classified as a “degenerate artist” and banned from painting, a contradiction that remains central to the interpretation of his work and his trajectory.
