Cy Twombly (1928–2011) was an American artist known for a gestural painting style made up of scribbles, inscriptions, and nearly calligraphic marks, at the boundary between abstraction and writing. Living for many years in Italy, he nourished his work with references to poetry, mythology, and antiquity, transforming the canvas into a space of memory and free association.
